Day 1: Arrival in Ulaanbaatar
Arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport. Transfer to hotel. Afternoon visit to Gandan Monastery and the National Museum of Mongolia. Evening traditional cultural performance with khoomii throat singing and contortion.
Day 2: Journey South โ Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa)
Begin the epic Gobi journey! Drive 400km south through Mongolia’s vast central steppe โ a landscape of endless horizons under the deepest blue sky. Arrive at Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa) โ a breathtaking 60m-high, 400m-long limestone escarpment sculpted by wind and rain into a surreal white-orange cliff face. These colorful cliffs were once the bottom of an ancient sea 60 million years ago. Explore on foot and photograph the dramatic formations at sunset when the rock glows orange and crimson.
Overnight: Ger camp
Day 3: Gurvan Saikhan National Park & Yolyn Am (Eagle Valley)
Drive 200km into the heart of the Gobi Desert. Enter Gurvan Saikhan National Park โ “Three Beauties of the Gobi.” Hike through Yolyn Am (Eagle Valley), a deep, narrow gorge in the Zuun Saikhan Mountains where ice can persist well into summer. The canyon walls rise hundreds of meters on both sides while lammergeier (bearded vultures) soar overhead. Spot ibex, argali sheep, and marmots amid the dramatic scenery. Visit the small but informative Gobi museum.
Overnight: Ger camp near Dalanzadgad
Day 4: Khongor Sand Dunes โ The Singing Sands
Drive 180km to the Khongoryn Els โ Mongolia’s largest sand dunes stretching 180km long, up to 20km wide, and rising 300m high. These are the “Singing Sands” โ when the wind blows or you slide down the dunes, the moving sand produces a low, humming sound like an airplane engine.
- Dune Climbing โ Challenge yourself to reach the highest point for 360-degree views of sand, steppe, and the Khongor River oasis below
- Camel Ride โ Explore the base of the dunes on a Bactrian camel, led by a local camel herder family
- Sunset on the Dunes โ One of Mongolia’s most spectacular sights โ watch the dunes change color from gold to orange to deep red as the sun sinks below the horizon
Overnight: Ger camp beside the dunes
Day 5: Bayanzag โ The Flaming Cliffs
Drive 150km to Bayanzag, known worldwide as the “Flaming Cliffs.” Discovered by American explorer Roy Chapman Andrews in 1922, this was one of the world’s greatest paleontological sites:
- Dinosaur Fossil Site โ The first-ever discovery of dinosaur eggs (protoceratops, 1923) happened here. Walk among the red sandstone cliffs where velociraptors once roamed and see fragments of 75-million-year-old fossils embedded in the rock
- Saxaul Forest โ Explore the unique saxaul tree forest โ hardy shrubs that thrive in the Gobi’s extreme conditions, their twisted branches creating an otherworldly landscape
- Sunset at the Flaming Cliffs โ As the setting sun hits the cliffs, they truly live up to their name, blazing brilliant red and orange
Overnight: Ger camp
Day 6: Ongi Temple Ruins
Drive 250km north through the vast Ongi steppe. Visit the ruins of Ongi Monastery โ once one of Mongolia’s largest Buddhist monastery complexes, home to over 1,000 monks across two temple compounds on both banks of the Ongi River. Destroyed during the 1939 communist purges, today you can explore the atmospheric ruins and visit the small reconstructed temple where a handful of monks have revived Buddhist practice. Climb the hill between the two complexes for panoramic views of the river valley.
Overnight: Ger camp
Day 7: Karakorum โ Ancient Capital of the Mongol Empire
Drive 250km to Karakorum, the 13th-century capital of the Mongol Empire (UNESCO Orkhon Valley). Visit Erdene Zuu Monastery (1586), built from the stones of the destroyed capital โ 108 stupas, three beautiful temples with original Buddhist art. Explore the Karakorum Museum with its scale model of the ancient city and Mongol Empire artifacts. See the stone turtles โ the only surviving monuments from Chinggis Khaan’s capital. Walk through the Orkhon Valley, the cradle of Mongolian civilization.
Overnight: Ger camp
Day 8: Hustai National Park โ Wild Takhi Horses
Drive 270km to Hustai National Park. Search for the Przewalski’s horse (takhi) โ the world’s only truly wild horse, successfully reintroduced here after extinction in the wild. With a park ranger, track herds of these magnificent animals across the forest-steppe landscape. Also spot red deer, gazelle, marmots, and eagles. Evening hike to watch the sunset over the rolling hills.
Overnight: Ger camp
Day 9: Return to Ulaanbaatar
Morning wildlife viewing opportunity. Drive back to Ulaanbaatar (100km). Afternoon free for exploration:
- Cashmere Shopping โ Mongolia is the world’s second-largest cashmere producer. Visit Gobi Cashmere or the State Department Store for high-quality, affordable cashmere products
- Zaisan Memorial โ Hilltop Soviet monument with panoramic UB views
- Bogd Khan Winter Palace Museum โ The last Mongolian king’s palace with exquisite Buddhist art and traditional artifacts
Farewell dinner at a traditional Mongolian restaurant featuring khorkhog (Mongolian stone barbecue).
Day 10: Departure from Ulaanbaatar
Transfer to airport. Bayartai! You’ve experienced the Gobi’s vast emptiness, 75-million-year-old dinosaur fossils, ancient imperial capitals, wild horses, camel rides on singing sand dunes, and the legendary hospitality of Mongolian nomads โ memories that will last a lifetime.
