Day 1: Arrive Mandalay
- Mandalay Airport Welcome โ Your guide greets you and takes you into Myanmar’s second largest city
- Mahamuni Pagoda โ Home to one of Myanmar’s three most sacred Buddha images. The 4-meter bronze statue, cast during the lifetime of the Buddha, is encased in centuries of gold leaf. The face is washed at 4:00 AM each morning in a ritual ceremony โ by afternoon, it glows brilliantly
- Gold Leaf Workshop โ A uniquely Mandalay experience: watch men pound gold into the impossibly thin leaves used to gild pagodas and Buddha images nationwide
- Sunset at Mandalay Hill โ Climb the covered stairway (1,729 steps) or drive to the summit. At 240 meters, you’ll see the Irrawaddy River, the Shan Mountains beyond, and the grid of Mandalay city below. The sunset light on the river is extraordinary
Overnight in Mandalay.
Day 2: Ancient Capitals โ Amarapura, Inwa & Sagaing
- Sunrise at U Bein Bridge โ Arrive before dawn at the world’s longest teak footbridge. As the first light hits, monks in crimson robes begin their morning crossing across Taungthaman Lake. Fishermen in small boats cast nets below. The entire scene, perfectly reflected in still water, is one of Southeast Asia’s most unforgettable sights
- Mahagandayon Monastery โ As 1,000+ monks line up with alms bowls at 10:30 AM, the air fills with the murmur of chanting. This daily ritual is one of Buddhism’s most powerful expressions of community and faith
- Inwa (Ava) by Horse Cart โ Cross the Myitnge River by ferry and explore the ancient island capital. The 27m leaning watchtower, the magnificent Maha Aungmye Bonzan brick monastery, and the teak Bagaya Monastery with its 267 pillars recall Myanmar’s last royal era
- Sagaing Hill Sunset โ Cross the Irrawaddy River to Sagaing, where 600+ white and gold monasteries blanket forested hills. The view from Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda โ countless stupas, the Irrawaddy winding below, the hills beyond โ is Myanmar’s most spiritual panorama
Overnight in Mandalay.
Day 3: Mandalay โ Bagan โ Into the Temple Plain
- Shwenandaw Monastery โ The “Golden Palace Monastery,” entirely carved from teak, is the sole surviving building from King Mindon’s 19th-century Royal Palace. Every surface tells a story through Jataka tales carved in exquisite detail
- Kuthodaw Pagoda โ The “World’s Largest Book” โ 729 marble slabs, each inscribed with a page of Buddhist scripture and housed in its own small white stupa. Walk among these gleaming stupas and contemplate the sheer scale of devotion
- Flight to Bagan โ 30-minute flight to the 42 kmยฒ Archaeological Zone, where over 2,200 temples and pagodas rise from the plain
- Shwezigon Pagoda โ Bagan’s most important active temple, a golden stupa that became the model for all later Burmese pagodas. Watch pilgrims applying gold leaf and offering flowers
- Ananda Temple โ Bagan’s architectural masterpiece (1105 AD). The perfectly proportioned temple houses four 9.5m standing Buddhas. The optical illusion is famous: the faces appear solemn from far away but gently smiling up close
- Sunset Pagoda View โ Climb a permitted temple for the quintessential Bagan sunset: hundreds of pagodas glowing golden as the sun sinks behind distant mountains
Overnight in Bagan.
Day 4: Bagan’s Greatest Temples & Mount Popa
- Optional: Hot Air Balloon at Dawn โ Drift over the temple-studded plain as the sun rises. Below, pagodas emerge from morning mist โ one of the world’s most extraordinary experiences (seasonal, additional cost)
- Thatbyinnyu & Dhammayangyi โ Bagan’s tallest temple (61m, gleaming white) and its most mysterious (built by the murderous King Narathu with bricks so perfectly laid a needle cannot fit between them)
- Sulamani Temple โ Bagan’s best-preserved temple with glorious 12th-century frescoes still visible inside. The name means “Crowning Jewel” โ entirely fitting
- Mount Popa โ Journey to this sacred extinct volcano, crowned by Popa Taungkalat โ a golden monastery dramatically perched on a volcanic plug. Climb 777 steps past cheeky monkeys, passing shrines to the 37 Nats (spirit gods) of Burmese animist belief. The 360ยฐ view from the summit over central Myanmar’s plains is absolutely breathtaking
- Final Bagan Sunset โ A different temple, a different perspective, but the same golden magic as the sun sets over Asia’s greatest archaeological site
Overnight in Bagan.
Day 5: Bagan’s Living Traditions & Farewell
- Nyaung U Market โ Bagan’s bustling morning market, where farmers sell fresh produce and women in colorful longyi shop for the day’s meals. The aroma of Burmese tea and fried snacks fills the air
- Lacquerware Workshop โ Bagan is the heart of Burmese lacquerware. See the entire ancient process: bamboo frames, layers of black lacquer, intricate hand-engraving, and final coloring. A single piece can take months to complete
- Manuha Temple โ Built by a captive Mon king who used the construction to express his suffering: Buddha images are squeezed into spaces too small for them โ a powerful architectural metaphor for imprisonment
- Farewell โ Transfer to Bagan Nyaung U Airport. In just 5 days, you have journeyed through 1,000 years of Myanmar’s history โ from the golden pagodas of Mandalay to the timeless temple plain of Bagan. This is the ancient heart of the Golden Land
