Day 1: Arrive Kota Kinabalu โ Gateway to Borneo
- Kota Kinabalu Airport (BKI) Pickup โ Welcome to Sabah, the Land Below the Wind
- Check into your city hotel with South China Sea views
- Evening: Filipino Night Market โ Grilled seafood on the waterfront, local handicrafts, sunset over the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park
- Signal Hill Observatory โ Panoramic views of KK city skyline and the outlying islands at dusk
Overnight in Kota Kinabalu.
Day 2: Kinabalu National Park โ UNESCO World Heritage
- Scenic 2-hour drive through the Crocker Range to Kinabalu Park (1,500m elevation)
- Kinabalu Park Botanical Garden โ Guided walk through mountain gardens showcasing 800+ orchid species, carnivorous pitcher plants (Nepenthes rajah โ the world’s largest, holding up to 3.5 liters), and the rare Rafflesia โ the world’s largest flower (up to 1m diameter, blooms only 5-7 days)
- Poring Hot Springs โ Natural sulphur hot springs in a tropical garden. Soak in Japanese-style open-air tubs fed by 49ยฐC mineral water
- Canopy Walkway โ 157m suspension walkway 41m above the rainforest floor. Walk among the canopy giants with views of Mt. Kinabalu (4,095m). Spot giant squirrels, rhinoceros hornbills, and if lucky, the crimson-headed partridge
- Kipungit Waterfall โ Short jungle trek to a cascading waterfall with a refreshing swimming hole

Day 3: Kinabalu Park to Sandakan โ Gateway to Wildlife
- Morning: Last walk through the mountain garden, photograph Mt. Kinabalu’s granite peaks piercing the morning clouds
- Drive back to KK, then afternoon flight to Sandakan (45 minutes)
- Sandakan Memorial Park โ Site of the WWII Sandakan POW camp and the harrowing Death Marches. Beautifully landscaped memorial garden on the original camp grounds โ a sobering but important historical visit
- Sandokan Heritage Trail โ Walk past colonial-era buildings: Agnes Keith House (American author who wrote “Land Below the Wind”), St. Michael’s Church (oldest stone church in Sabah, 1893), and the 100-step staircase
- Check into your eco-lodge on the edge of the rainforest

Day 4: Sepilok โ Orangutans & Sun Bears
- Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre โ Morning feeding session (10am): Watch orphaned and rescued orangutans swing down from the forest canopy on ropes to the feeding platform. These intelligent great apes share 97% of human DNA. Observe their individual personalities from the viewing gallery and boardwalk โ no cages, the orangutans are semi-wild and free to come and go
- Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre โ Next door to Sepilok, the world’s only sun bear conservation centre. See the world’s smallest bear (Malayan sun bear, 30โ65kg) up close from the elevated boardwalk. Watch them climb trees with their long curved claws and use their 25cm tongues to extract honey
- Rainforest Discovery Centre โ Afternoon walk on the canopy walkway (347m) and observation towers. Spot giant flying squirrels, rhinoceros hornbills, and if extremely lucky โ a wild orangutan in the treetops
- Evening: Night Walk โ Guided nocturnal walk to spot flying squirrels, slow lorises, civets, tarsiers, and glowing fungi

Day 5: Kinabatangan River โ Proboscis Monkeys & Pygmy Elephants
- Drive to Sukau on the Kinabatangan River (2.5 hours), Borneo’s longest river and Malaysia’s richest wildlife area
- Afternoon River Cruise โ Drift silently along the muddy Kinabatangan, prime wildlife-viewing time:
- Proboscis Monkeys โ Endemic to Borneo, with their distinctive bulbous noses (males) and pot bellies. See entire harems settling into riverside trees for the night
- Bornean Pygmy Elephants โ The world’s smallest elephants (1.5โ2.2m tall), the most endangered subspecies. If the herd is near the river, you’ll see them bathing and playing โ an unforgettable sight
- Crocodiles, monitor lizards, macaques, silvered leaf monkeys
- Hornbills โ All 8 species of Bornean hornbills including rhinoceros, helmeted, and wrinkled hornbills
- Night River Safari โ After dinner, spotlight cruise to find nocturnal wildlife: buffy fish owls, sleeping kingfishers, and the glowing eyes of crocodiles

Day 6: Kinabatangan Rainforest Trek & Return to KK
- Dawn River Cruise โ Mist rising from the river, gibbons calling across the canopy, hornbills flying overhead. The rainforest comes alive at first light. Best chance to see orangutans in the wild
- Oxbow Lake Trek โ Short guided jungle walk to an oxbow lake hidden in the forest. Spot birdwing butterflies with 15cm wingspans, pitcher plants, and perhaps a wild orangutan nest high in a tree
- Farewell to the river โ transfer back to Sandakan, flight to Kota Kinabalu
- Farewell Dinner โ Seafood feast at the KK waterfront, fresh from the South China Sea
Overnight in Kota Kinabalu.
Day 7: Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park & Departure
- Island Hopping โ 15-minute speedboat to the 5-island marine park:
- Snorkel over vibrant coral gardens just 5m from the beach
- Walk between islands at low tide on sandbars
- Swim with colourful reef fish in waist-deep water
- Transfer to Kota Kinabalu Airport (BKI) for departure
Borneo leaves you with images of orangutans swinging through ancient trees and elephants bathing in a brown river at sunset โ wild, raw, and unforgettable.
