Day Tour - Angkor's Hidden Gems: A Journey Beyond the Crowds
We will start at 08:00 am. This captivating journey takes you beyond the usual tourist trail, exploring the architectural wonders and historical significance of several breathtaking Angkor temples.
The "Citadel of Women": Banteay Srei: Our journey begins at the breathtaking Banteay Srei, also known as the "Citadel of Women." This 10th-century temple is a true gem of Angkor art. Marvel at the intricate pink sandstone carvings, some of the finest examples of classical Khmer artistry. These remarkable bas-reliefs depict scenes from Hindu mythology, their vibrant colors defying the passage of time. Banteay Srei's unique construction using pink sandstone sets it apart from other Angkor temples.
Preah Khan's Enchanting Embrace: Next, we delve into the ruins of Preah Khan, a temple commissioned by the prolific "temple builder" King Jayavarman VII in honor of his father. This atmospheric site offers an interesting contrast to the grandeur of Angkor Wat. Wander through the courtyards where towering trees intertwine with crumbling stone structures, creating a truly mystical ambiance. A Refreshing Break: After exploring the Grand Circuit temples, we'll have a break for lunch (not included). Enjoy a delicious Cambodian meal at a nearby restaurant or pack your own picnic to savor amidst the Angkor complex.
- Island Sanctuary: Neak Pean Our journey continues to Neak Pean, an artificial island adorned with a Hindu temple. This serene island sits amidst the vast Jayatataka Baray, a reservoir once linked to the Preah Khan temple complex. Soak in the tranquil atmosphere as you explore the intricately carved temple, a testament to the Khmer Empire's architectural mastery.
- East Mebon's Majesty: Following the serenity of Neak Pean, we head to East Mebon, a temple mountain rising from the center of the East Baray reservoir. This 10th-century monument offers a unique perspective on Angkor's impressive hydraulic engineering achievements.
- Pre Rup's Grandeur: Our final stop for the day is the majestic Pre Rup, a temple mountain built as the state temple of King Rajendravarman II in the 10th century. This impressive structure combines brick, laterite, and sandstone construction, showcasing the Khmer Empire's architectural prowess. Ascend the steps (proper attire required: knees and shoulders covered) and be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the surrounding Angkor landscape.
Returning to Siem Reap: Following this captivating journey through Angkor's hidden treasures, we'll return to Siem Reap, allowing you to cherish the memories of a day filled with awe-inspiring discoveries.
