Days 1-2: Colombo & Cultural Triangle Gateway

Day 1: Arrive Colombo, transfer to Negombo beach hotel. Relax and recover.

Day 2: Drive to the Cultural Triangle. Visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage en route. Arrive at Sigiriya area.

  • Minneriya National Park Elephant Gathering โ€” During dry season (June-September), witness one of Asia’s greatest wildlife spectacles: up to 300 wild elephants gathering around the Minneriya Tank. This is the largest annual congregation of Asian elephants anywhere in the world

Day 3: Anuradhapura โ€” The First Capital

Journey to Anuradhapura (UNESCO), Sri Lanka’s first capital and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world (founded 4th century BC). This vast archaeological park spans 40 sq km:

  • Sri Maha Bodhi โ€” The world’s oldest historically documented tree (planted 288 BC), a sapling from the original Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. It has been continuously guarded for over 2,300 years
  • Ruwanwelisaya Stupa โ€” The “Great Stupa,” a 103m-high white dome built in 140 BC, one of the world’s tallest ancient monuments. The sheer scale is breathtaking โ€” 90 million baked bricks and a circumference of 290m
  • Jetavanaramaya Stupa โ€” Once the world’s tallest stupa at 122m (originally, now 71m), and the world’s third-tallest ancient structure after the Pyramids of Giza
  • Abhayagiri Monastery โ€” A 5th-century monastic complex that once housed 5,000 monks, with the famous Samadhi Buddha statue and the Moonstone โ€” an intricately carved semicircular doorstep considered the finest in Sri Lanka
  • Isurumuniya Temple โ€” Rock-cut temple famous for the 6th-century “Lovers” carving

Day 4: Polonnaruwa โ€” The Medieval Capital

Polonnaruwa (UNESCO) โ€” Sri Lanka’s medieval capital (11th-13th centuries), a compact and exquisitely preserved archaeological park:

  • Gal Vihara โ€” Four colossal Buddha statues carved from a single granite cliff: a 14m reclining Buddha, a 7m standing Buddha, and two seated Buddhas. These 12th-century masterpieces are considered the finest examples of Sinhalese stone carving
  • Royal Palace of King Parakramabahu โ€” The 7-story palace ruins, once with 1,000 rooms
  • Vatadage โ€” The circular relic house with four exquisitely carved Buddha entrances and guard stones, possibly the finest ancient structure in Sri Lanka
  • Parakrama Samudra โ€” The “Sea of Parakrama,” a vast 2,500-hectare reservoir built in the 12th century, testament to the astonishing hydraulic civilization of ancient Sri Lanka

Day 5: Sigiriya & Dambulla

  • Sigiriya Lion Rock โ€” Climb the 5th-century palace-fortress atop the 200m monolith. The Mirror Wall, celestial frescoes, Lion’s Paws, and summit ruins reward the 1,200-step climb with a journey through one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites on earth
  • Dambulla Cave Temple โ€” Five caves with 153 Buddha statues and stunning ceiling frescoes spanning 2,000 years of Buddhist art

Day 6: Kandy โ€” The Sacred City

Stop at a spice garden in Matale en route to Kandy. Afternoon visits to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the Royal Botanical Gardens. Evening Kandyan cultural show.
