Day 1: Arrive Kuching โ€” City of Cats, Sarawak

  • Kuching Airport (KCH) Pickup โ€” Welcome to Sarawak, the Land of the Hornbills
  • Kuching Waterfront Evening Walk โ€” Beautifully landscaped 1km esplanade along the Sarawak River. Colonial buildings: Astana (former White Rajah palace, 1870), Fort Margherita (1879), Square Tower. Watch tambang (traditional wooden boats) ferry across the river at sunset
  • Dinner at Top Spot Seafood Centre โ€” legendary rooftop food court with tanks of live seafood

Overnight in Kuching.

Day 2: Semenggoh & Bako National Park

  • Semenggoh Wildlife Centre โ€” Morning feeding session (9am). Unlike Sepilok, Semenggoh is a fully wild orangutan reserve โ€” the 27 semi-wild orangutans live in the 740-hectare forest and only come to the feeding platform when wild fruit is scarce. Seeing the dominant male “Ritchie” (massive cheek pads) emerge from the forest is a privilege
  • Bako National Park โ€” Sarawak’s oldest national park (1957). 20-minute boat ride to a stunning peninsula of rainforest, mangroves, and sea stacks:
    • Hike the Telok Paku trail (0.8km) โ€” spot proboscis monkeys in the mangroves, bearded pigs on the beach
    • See the iconic sea stack rock formations
    • Spot silvered leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, monitor lizards, and 7 types of pitcher plant
  • Return by boat, evening free in Kuching

Overnight in Kuching.

Day 3: Kuching to Mulu โ€” World Heritage Caves

  • Morning flight to Mulu (1.5 hours)
  • Arrive at Gunung Mulu National Park (UNESCO World Heritage) โ€” a pristine rainforest surrounding some of the world’s most spectacular caves
  • Deer Cave & Lang Cave โ€” Walk the 3.8km plankwalk through primary rainforest:
    • Lang Cave โ€” Stunning stalactites and stalagmites, delicate shawls and rimstone pools dramatically lit
    • Deer Cave โ€” One of the world’s largest cave passages (120m high, 150m wide, 2km long). The cavern could fit St. Paul’s Cathedral 5 times over. See the famous “Abraham Lincoln” rock profile silhouetted at the cave entrance
    • Bat Exodus at Dusk โ€” From the bat observatory, watch 2-3 million wrinkled-lipped bats spiral out of Deer Cave in a mesmerizing black ribbon formation against the orange sky. This happens every single evening โ€” one of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles

Overnight at Mulu rainforest resort.

Day 4: Mulu โ€” Clearwater & Wind Caves

  • Longboat to Clearwater Cave โ€” Cruise up the Melinau River in a traditional longboat through pristine rainforest
  • Clearwater Cave โ€” Asia’s longest cave system (227km mapped). See the crystal-clear underground river that gives the cave its name. 200 steps through the mountain to emerge at the “Lady’s Cave” โ€” a massive chamber with ancient burials
  • Wind Cave โ€” Named for the cool breezes flowing through narrow passages. Beautiful king’s chamber with intricate flowstone formations
  • Swim at Clearwater Spring โ€” Picnic and swim in the crystal-clear pool at the cave entrance, surrounded by butterflies and tropical forest
  • Canopy Skywalk โ€” 480m walkway through the rainforest canopy, the world’s longest tree-based canopy walk

Overnight at Mulu.

Day 5: Mulu to Kota Kinabalu โ€” Sabah

  • Morning: Optional Pinnacles Viewpoint trek (short version) or free time at the resort
  • Flight to Kota Kinabalu via Miri or direct

Day 7: Desa Dairy Farm & Transfer to Sandakan

  • Desa Cattle Dairy Farm โ€” “Little New Zealand” of Sabah. Black-and-white Holstein cows grazing on green pastures with Mount Kinabalu as backdrop. Fresh milk, yogurt, and gelato straight from the farm. Photo opportunities galore
  • Drive back to KK, afternoon flight to Sandakan
  • Sandakan Heritage Trail โ€” Agnes Keith House, St. Michael’s Church

Overnight near Sepilok.

Day 8: Sepilok Wildlife Sanctuaries

  • Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre โ€” morning feeding
  • Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre
  • Rainforest Discovery Centre โ€” canopy walkway and observation towers

  • Drive to Sukau, Kinabatangan River

  • Gomantong Caves โ€” Massive limestone cave system where millions of swiftlets nest in total darkness. Harvesters climb 90m bamboo poles to collect prized edible bird’s nests (for bird’s nest soup, worth up to $3,000/kg). Not for the squeamish โ€” the cave floor is alive with cockroaches and centipedes processing the guano โ€” but an utterly unique, real-world experience
  • Return to KK via Sandakan flight

Overnight in Kota Kinabalu.

Day 11: Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park

  • Full day island hopping in the marine park โ€” snorkeling, swimming, beach time
  • Farewell dinner at the KK waterfront
