Day 1: Arrival in Colombo
Welcome to Sri Lanka! Transfer to your hotel. Evening walk through Colombo’s colonial quarters and Galle Face Green. Relax before the adventure begins.
Day 2: Kitulgala โ White Water Rafting
Drive to Kitulgala (85km), Sri Lanka’s adventure capital. White Water Rafting on the Kelani River โ tackle 5 major rapids and 4 minor ones over a 5km stretch through pristine tropical rainforest. This is where the Oscar-winning film “The Bridge on the River Kwai” was filmed in 1957. Grade 2-3 rapids make it exciting but accessible. After a riverside BBQ lunch:
- Jungle Trekking โ Guided hike through rainforest trails, crossing suspension bridges and discovering hidden waterfalls. Swim in natural rock pools. Spot purple-faced langur monkeys, giant squirrels, and endemic birds
Overnight: Eco-lodge in Kitulgala.
Day 3: Nuwara Eliya โ Tea Country Adventure
Drive into the mountains (110km). Tea plantation visit and factory tour. Afternoon hike through tea trails with panoramic views. Visit a working tea estate and learn about the lives of tea pluckers.
Day 4: Ella โ Mountain Paradise
Scenic train ride. Hike to Ella Rock (a more challenging alternative to Little Adam’s Peak) with spectacular 360ยฐ views. Explore the charming village. Visit Ravana Falls and Ravana Cave โ a natural tunnel associated with the Ramayana legend.
Day 5: Udawalawe National Park
Drive to Udawalawe (130km). Jeep Safari โ Udawalawe is the best place in Sri Lanka for guaranteed elephant sightings. The park’s open grasslands and large reservoir attract herds year-round. Over 400 elephants call this park home. Also home to water buffalo, crocodiles, monitor lizards, and over 180 bird species. Visit the Elephant Transit Home to see orphaned elephants being rehabilitated.
Day 6: Yala National Park
Morning drive to Yala (100km). Afternoon jeep safari in one of the world’s best leopard habitats. Two parks, two completely different ecosystems โ Udawalawe for elephants, Yala for leopards.
Day 7: Bundala National Park โ Bird Paradise
Morning safari at Bundala National Park (UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) โ Sri Lanka’s premier bird sanctuary with 197 species including greater flamingos (November-March), painted storks, and migratory shorebirds from Siberia. Afternoon drive to the southern coast.
Day 8: Mirissa โ Whale Watching
Morning Whale Watching Excursion โ Mirissa is one of the world’s best locations for seeing blue whales (the largest animal ever to exist) just a few kilometers offshore. With a 90%+ sighting success rate (November-April), you may also see sperm whales, spinner dolphins, and sea turtles. Afternoon relaxation on Mirissa’s crescent-shaped beach.
Day 9: Galle Fort & Coastal Exploration
Explore the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort. Continue to Hikkaduwa Marine Sanctuary for snorkeling among coral reefs and tropical fish (optional). Photo stop at stilt fishermen.
Day 10: Sinharaja Rainforest Trek
Day trip to Sinharaja Forest Reserve (UNESCO) โ Sri Lanka’s last viable primary tropical rainforest and a biodiversity hotspot. A guided 4-6 hour trek reveals:
