Day 1: Arrive Paro, Drive to Thimphu

Welcome to Bhutan โ€” the Land of the Thunder Dragon! Your thrilling flight into Paro (one of only 8 pilots worldwide certified to land here) sets the tone for adventure. Transfer to Thimphu (1.5hrs). Evening orientation walk through the capital โ€” the only one in the world with no traffic lights (they tried one, citizens complained it was “impersonal,” and it was removed). Welcome dinner.

Overnight in Thimphu.

Day 2: Thimphu โ€” The Living Capital

  • Buddha Dordenma โ€” The colossal 51.5m gold Buddha with 125,000 smaller statues inside, visible from almost anywhere in the valley
  • National Memorial Chorten โ€” Spiritual center of daily Bhutanese life โ€” elderly pilgrims with prayer beads, young mothers with babies, all circumambulating in devotion
  • Tashichho Dzong โ€” The “Fortress of Glorious Religion,” Bhutan’s administrative and religious heart. The intricate woodwork, massive whitewashed walls, and golden spires exemplify Bhutanese architecture at its finest
  • School of Traditional Arts (Zorig Chusum) โ€” Watch students master Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts: thangka painting, wood carving, embroidery, statue-making, and more. The dedication is inspiring
  • Centenary Farmers Market โ€” Bhutan’s largest domestic market (weekends). Vibrant stalls of dried chilies (Bhutan’s unofficial national food), wild honey, local cheese, betel nut, and colorful textiles

Day 3: Dochula Pass & Punakha โ€” The Ancient Capital

  • Dochula Pass โ€” At 3,100m, this is one of Bhutan’s most spectacular mountain passes. The 108 memorial chortens (stupas) were built by the Queen Mother, and on clear days, the entire eastern Himalayan range unfolds โ€” a 360-degree panorama of snow-capped peaks including Masagang (7,158m) and Gangkar Puensum (7,570m, the world’s highest unclimbed mountain)
  • Punakha Dzong โ€” Bhutan’s most beautiful fortress! Situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (Father River) and Mo Chhu (Mother River), this 17th-century architectural masterpiece served as Bhutan’s winter capital for 300 years. The dzong houses the sacred remains of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal โ€” the unifier of Bhutan โ€” and was the site of Bhutan’s royal weddings. Cross the traditional cantilever bridge and explore the six-story central tower (utse), the hundred-pillar assembly hall, and the courtyard with its magnificent bodhi tree
  • Chimi Lhakhang โ€” The “Fertility Temple” built by the Divine Madman, Lama Drukpa Kunley, in 1499. A 20-minute walk through rice paddies leads to this uniquely decorated temple famed for blessing couples with children. Thousands of pilgrims from around the world have reported success!

Overnight in Punakha.

Day 4: Punakha Valley & Return to Paro

  • Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten โ€” A stunning temple built by the Queen Mother for Bhutan’s protection. A 1hr hike through terraced rice fields leads to this four-story shrine with elaborate tantric murals and 360ยฐ views of the Punakha Valley
  • Punakha Suspension Bridge โ€” One of Bhutan’s longest suspension bridges, stretching 160m across the Pho Chhu River. The views of the turquoise river and distant mountains are spectacular
  • Drive back to Paro (4hrs), crossing Dochula Pass again. Stop at Tamchog Lhakhang โ€” a 15th-century temple accessible only by a traditional iron chain suspension bridge, built by the legendary bridge-builder Thangtong Gyalpo

Overnight in Paro.

Day 5: Taktsang Monastery โ€” The Tiger’s Nest

  • Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) โ€” The moment you’ve been waiting for. Begin the 5-6hr round-trip pilgrimage to Bhutan’s most sacred site. The trail climbs through blue pine forests adorned with prayer flags. At the midway viewpoint, the monastery first appears โ€” impossibly perched on a cliff 900m above the valley. Arriving at the monastery, you’ll explore four main temples, the sacred cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated, and countless small shrines. The spiritual energy is palpable โ€” Buddhist pilgrims prostrate, monks chant, butter lamps flicker in the dim temple interiors. This isn’t just a photo opportunity โ€” it’s a transformative experience
  • Evening: Farmhouse Dinner โ€” Enjoy a traditional Bhutanese dinner in a family home. Multiple courses of ema datshi (chili cheese), kewa datshi (potato cheese), shamu datshi (mushroom cheese), red rice, and momos (dumplings). Share ara (local brew) with your hosts and learn about daily life in rural Bhutan

Overnight in Paro.

Day 6: Departure

Visit Kyichu Lhakhang (7th century) for a final blessing. Transfer to Paro Airport. As your Druk Air flight climbs out of the valley, the Himalayas recede into the distance โ€” but the memory of Bhutan, a country that has redefined what it means to be a nation, will stay with you forever. Log jay gay โ€” until we meet again!
