Day 1: Arrive Luang Prabang

  • Airport Welcome โ€” Your private guide meets you at Luang Prabang International Airport. Transfer through quiet streets of French colonial architecture and gilded temples
  • Afternoon Heritage Walk โ€” Explore the UNESCO-protected old town on foot. Visit Wat Mai with its stunning gold bas-relief faรงade, then stroll past the Royal Palace Museum. Enjoy a Lao iced coffee at a riverside cafรฉ as the Mekong flows by
  • Mount Phousi Sunset โ€” Climb to the golden stupa atop the town’s central hill for 360ยฐ views: the Mekong on one side, the Nam Khan River on the other, and the tiled roofs and temple spires of Luang Prabang spread below
  • Night Market & Dinner โ€” Explore the handicraft market, then dine on Laap (the national dish โ€” minced meat salad with herbs, lime, and toasted rice powder) at a restaurant overlooking the Mekong

Overnight in Luang Prabang.

Day 2: Sacred Rituals & Kuang Si Waterfall

  • Alms Giving at Dawn โ€” Rise at 5:30 AM to participate in Tak Bat. Kneel roadside with a scarf and offer sticky rice to the procession of saffron-robed monks. Your guide will teach you proper etiquette โ€” head below the monks, no eye contact, women should not touch the monks โ€” making this a respectful, meaningful experience
  • Kuang Si Waterfall โ€” Journey through the lush Lao countryside to this multi-tiered paradise. The milky-turquoise pools are perfect for swimming. Hike to the top trail for a different perspective, then visit the bear sanctuary
  • Wat Xiengthong โ€” The crown jewel of Luang Prabang’s temples. Built in 1560 by King Setthathirath, its sweeping roof lines are the quintessential example of classical Lao temple architecture. The “Tree of Life” mosaic on the back wall is a masterpiece of colored glass

Overnight in Luang Prabang.

Day 3: Pak Ou Caves โ†’ Vang Vieng

  • Mekong River Cruise to Pak Ou Caves โ€” 2-hour boat journey past dramatic limestone karsts and riverside villages. At the caves, explore thousands of Buddha statues left by pilgrims over centuries โ€” from tiny 10cm figures to life-sized gilded statues. Climb to the upper cave for river views
  • Scenic Drive to Vang Vieng โ€” After lunch, begin the breathtaking 5-hour drive through the mountains of northern Laos. The road winds through karst landscapes that rival Vietnam’s Halong Bay and China’s Guilin โ€” towering limestone peaks wrapped in jungle, traditional Hmong and Khmu villages, and endless mountain vistas
  • Arrive Vang Vieng โ€” Once known as a backpacker party town, Vang Vieng has transformed into an eco-adventure hub. Your hotel overlooks the Nam Song River and the jagged karst peaks beyond

Overnight in Vang Vieng.

Day 4: Vang Vieng Adventure

  • Hot Air Balloon Ride (Optional) โ€” Vang Vieng offers one of the world’s most affordable and scenic hot air balloon experiences. Optional early morning flight over the karst landscape (additional cost, book in advance)
  • Tham Chang Cave โ€” The “Cave of the Resistant,” used as a bunker during the wars. A short climb up steps from town leads to a cave entrance with stunning views of the town, river, and mountains. The cave itself is illuminated, revealing impressive stalactite formations
  • Blue Lagoon & Tham Phu Kham Cave โ€” A crystal-clear natural swimming pool fed by an underground spring, surrounded by jungle. Swing from a tree rope into the refreshing water. Then climb into the cave above โ€” Tham Phu Kham โ€” which houses a bronze reclining Buddha
  • Nam Song River Tubing & Kayaking โ€” Float down the gentle Nam Song River in an inner tube or kayak, passing beneath towering limestone cliffs, small villages, and riverside bars. Your guide accompanies you to show the best stopping points. This is the quintessential Vang Vieng experience, now safer and more family-friendly

Overnight in Vang Vieng.

Day 5: Vang Vieng โ†’ Vientiane โ€” The Capital

  • Morning Sunrise Viewpoint โ€” If energy permits, take a short hike to the Vang Vieng viewpoint for panoramic sunrise vistas of the karst valley emerging from the mist
  • Drive to Vientiane โ€” 3-4 hour journey south through plains and small towns to Laos’s sleepy capital on the Mekong River
  • Pha That Luang โ€” The Great Stupa, Laos’s most important national monument and a symbol of Lao sovereignty. This massive golden stupa, standing 45 meters tall, is said to contain a relic of the Buddha. The golden spire against the blue sky is iconic โ€” visit in late afternoon for the best light
  • Patuxai Victory Monument โ€” Vientiane’s Arc de Triomphe, built in the 1960s with concrete donated by the US for an airport runway (earning it the nickname “the vertical runway”). Climb to the top for panoramic views of Vientiane’s tree-lined boulevards

Overnight in Vientiane.

Day 6: Vientiane Discovery

  • Wat Sisaket โ€” Vientiane’s oldest surviving temple (built 1818), and the only one to survive the Siamese invasion of 1828. The cloister walls contain 6,840 Buddha statues in small niches โ€” a mesmerizing collection of silver, bronze, and ceramic Buddhas
  • Wat Phra Keo โ€” Formerly the royal temple of the Lao monarchy, now a museum of Buddhist art. It once housed the Emerald Buddha (now in Bangkok’s Wat Phra Keo) until it was taken by the Siamese in 1779
  • COPE Visitor Centre โ€” A sobering but essential museum about the Secret War and ongoing UXO (unexploded ordnance) clearance efforts in Laos โ€” the most bombed country per capita in history. Inspiring stories of resilience and rehabilitation
  • Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan) โ€” 25km outside Vientiane, this surreal sculpture park contains over 200 Hindu and Buddhist statues, including a massive 40-meter reclining Buddha and a giant pumpkin structure with three levels representing Hell, Earth, and Heaven that you can climb through
  • Mekong Riverside Sunset โ€” End the day along the Mekong promenade. Watch the sunset over Thailand on the opposite bank, browse the night market, and enjoy a final Lao dinner โ€” perhaps some grilled Mekong fish with spicy jeow (dipping sauce) and sticky rice

Overnight in Vientiane.

Day 7: Farewell Laos

  • Morning Market Visit โ€” Explore the Talat Sao (Morning Market) for last-minute souvenirs โ€” Lao coffee beans, silk scarves, and saa paper products
  • Farewell โ€” Private transfer to Wattay International Airport. Depart with memories of Laos โ€” the world’s only landlocked country in Southeast Asia, where the pace is slow, the people are gentle, and the Buddhist spirit pervades every aspect of daily life. “Sabai Sabai” โ€” take it easy!
