Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka
Monsoons, Seasons & When to Go Where
Sri Lanka’s Dual Monsoon System
Sri Lanka is a year-round destination thanks to its dual monsoon pattern. When one coast is rainy, the other is sunny. The southwest monsoon (May-September) brings rain to Colombo, Galle, and the south coast. The northeast monsoon (November-February) affects the east coast. The Cultural Triangle is largely rain-shadowed and good year-round.
Best Overall: December-March
The most popular time, with fine weather across most of the country. The south and west coasts are at their best. Whale watching season (Mirissa). Hill country is cool and pleasant.
Best for East Coast: April-September
When the southwest monsoon hits, head east. Trincomalee, Pasikudah, and Arugam Bay shine from April to September. Arugam Bay is one of Asia’s best surf destinations during these months.
Wildlife Calendar
Elephant gathering at Minneriya: July-October. Leopard sightings best: February-July (when water is scarce, animals concentrate at waterholes). Whale watching off Mirissa: November-April.
