Day 1: Arrival in Paro, The Last Shangri-La

Fly into Paro on one of the world’s most thrilling airport approaches โ€” Himalayan giants tower on both sides as your plane descends into the emerald valley. Your Bhutanese guide welcomes you with a traditional white khata (ceremonial scarf). Drive to Thimphu (1.5hrs) through stunning river valley scenery. Evening walk through Thimphu’s charming streets. Welcome dinner featuring Bhutan’s national dish โ€” ema datshi (chilies and cheese)!

Overnight in Thimphu.

Day 2: Thimphu โ€” The World’s Only Capital Without Traffic Lights

  • Buddha Dordenma โ€” The magnificent 51.5m golden Buddha overlooking the valley with 125,000 miniature Buddhas inside
  • National Memorial Chorten โ€” Join the morning circumambulation with devout Bhutanese, a profound cultural immersion
  • Tashichho Dzong โ€” Bhutan’s most important fortress-monastery, housing the King’s throne room and the central monastic body. The northern entrance is open to visitors on weekends
  • Motithang Takin Preserve โ€” Meet Bhutan’s unusual national animal โ€” the takin, a goat-antelope with the head of a goat and body of a cow. Legend says the Divine Madman created it from a goat’s head and cow’s bones!
  • Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory โ€” See traditional paper-making from daphne bark, unchanged for centuries
  • Archery Ground โ€” Watch Bhutan’s national sport at Changlimithang Stadium. The celebratory dances when someone hits the target are as entertaining as the archery itself!

Overnight in Thimphu.

Day 3: Chele La Pass & Haa Valley โ€” Bhutan’s Hidden Gem

  • Chele La Pass โ€” Drive to Bhutan’s highest motorable pass at 3,988m. On clear days, the views are staggering โ€” the sacred peak Jomolhari (7,326m) dominates the northern skyline, flanked by Jichu Drake (6,794m). The pass is adorned with thousands of fluttering prayer flags sending blessings on the wind
  • Haa Valley โ€” Descend into Bhutan’s most pristine and least-visited valley, opened to tourism only in 2002. Haa’s untouched charm is a revelation โ€” traditional farmhouses with painted wooden facades, fields of buckwheat and barley, and the two sacred temples of Lhakhang Karpo (White Temple) and Lhakhang Nagpo (Black Temple), built in the 7th century on the same day by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo
  • Farmhouse Visit โ€” Share butter tea and ara (local rice wine) with a Haa farming family. Learn about their daily life, agricultural practices, and the deep spiritual beliefs that guide Bhutanese society

Overnight in Haa Valley.

Day 4: Tiger’s Nest โ€” The Ultimate Pilgrimage

Drive to Paro (2hrs). The big day has arrived!

  • Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) โ€” The full-day highlight of your Bhutan journey. The iconic monastery clings impossibly to a sheer cliff face 900m above the Paro Valley. The 5-6hr round-trip hike winds through pine forests draped in Spanish moss, past fluttering prayer flags and small chortens. Reaching the monastery itself is spiritually overwhelming โ€” enter the sacred caves where Guru Rinpoche meditated, light butter lamps, and receive blessings from resident monks. The view from the Tiger’s Nest cafe across the gorge is one of the most photogenic on Earth
  • Hot Stone Bath โ€” End your day with a traditional Bhutanese dotsho (hot stone bath). River stones are heated in a fire and dropped into a wooden tub filled with water and Artemisia leaves โ€” the perfect remedy for tired muscles after the Tiger’s Nest hike

Overnight in Paro.

Day 5: Departure from Paro

Morning visit to Kyichu Lhakhang โ€” one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, with an orange tree that fruits perpetually. Then transfer to Paro Airport. As you depart, watch the Himalayas fade into the distance โ€” you’ve experienced the last great Himalayan kingdom, a country that measures its success in happiness, not wealth. Kadrinche la โ€” thank you, Bhutan!

Why Haa Valley?

Haa Valley is western Bhutan’s best-kept secret. Opened to tourism only in 2002, it remains blissfully untouched by mass tourism. With only a handful of hotels, you’ll experience authentic Bhutanese village life that travelers miss on the standard Paro-Thimphu circuit. The drive over Chele La Pass (3,988m) alone โ€” with views of Jomolhari โ€” is worth the trip.
