Overnight in Punakha.

Day 5: Phobjikha Valley โ€” The Glacial Valley of Cranes

Today’s destination is one of Bhutan’s most magical places โ€” the glacial Phobjikha Valley at 3,000m elevation.

  • Scenic Drive โ€” 4hrs through changing landscapes: subtropical Punakha transitions to alpine forests of rhododendron, magnolia, and dwarf bamboo
  • Gangtey Monastery โ€” A magnificent 17th-century Nyingmapa monastery perched on a ridge overlooking the vast U-shaped glacial valley. The monastery is the only Nyingma monastery west of the Black Mountains and the seat of the Gangtey Trulku โ€” the reincarnation of Terton Pema Lingpa
  • Phobjikha Valley Nature Trail โ€” A gentle 1.5hr nature walk across the valley floor. This wetland is the winter home of the endangered Black-necked Crane (Grus nigricollis), which migrates from the Tibetan Plateau every October. These elegant birds โ€” revered in Bhutanese culture โ€” circle the Gangtey Monastery three times on arrival and departure, as if paying homage. The valley’s unique ecosystem includes wild boar, barking deer, Himalayan black bear, and over 100 bird species

Overnight: Phobjikha Valley guesthouse.

Day 6: Phobjikha to Paro โ€” The Long Drive Home

  • Black-Necked Crane Information Centre โ€” Learn about crane conservation and use the spotting scopes to observe these majestic birds (October-March). The center’s interactive exhibits explain the cranes’ 600km migration route and Bhutan’s successful conservation efforts
  • Drive to Paro โ€” 6hr drive crossing Dochula Pass for the third time, offering yet another chance to capture the Himalayan panorama. Stop at Wangdue Phodrang Dzong โ€” a dramatic fortress being rebuilt after a 2012 fire

Overnight in Paro.

Day 7: Tiger’s Nest โ€” The Crown Jewel

  • Taktsang Monastery Hike โ€” The full-day pilgrimage to Bhutan’s most sacred site. Start early to catch the morning light on the monastery. The trail has been recently improved with rest stops and viewpoints. At the monastery, explore the eight caves and four main temples. Receive a blessing from the resident lama
  • Kyichu Lhakhang โ€” A peaceful farewell visit to one of Bhutan’s oldest temples
  • Farewell Dinner โ€” Bhutanese hot stone bath followed by a traditional multi-course dinner celebrating your journey through the Thunder Dragon Kingdom

Day 8: Departure

Transfer to Paro Airport. As your plane rises above the valley, reflect on eight extraordinary days โ€” from the rarefied heights of Tiger’s Nest to the serene expanse of Phobjikha, from the rush of white water in Punakha to the silent reverence of ancient temples. Phobjikha โ€” Why Go?

Phobjikha Valley is Bhutan’s best-kept natural secret. This vast U-shaped glacial valley at 3,000m is one of the most important wildlife preserves in the Himalayas. From late October to March, it hosts 400-500 black-necked cranes โ€” birds so sacred that Bhutanese law mandates life imprisonment for killing one. The Gangtey Monastery’s annual crane festival (November 12) features local schoolchildren performing crane dances. Even without the cranes, the valley’s pristine beauty โ€” buckwheat fields, traditional farmhouses, and misty pine forests โ€” is worth every kilometer of the journey.
