Thailand has three main seasons, and your experience varies enormously depending on when and where you go. The good news: there’s always somewhere in Thailand with great weather.
Cool & Dry Season (November to February)
The best time for most travelers. Temperatures are pleasant (25-32°C), humidity is low, and blue skies prevail. This is peak tourist season — expect higher prices and more people at major attractions. Book accommodation months ahead, especially for popular islands like Phuket and Koh Samui. December and January are the busiest months.
Hot Season (March to May)
Temperatures climb to 35-40°C, especially in Bangkok and inland areas. The Songkran Festival (Thai New Year, April 13-15) transforms the entire country into a joyous nationwide water fight — an unforgettable cultural experience. For beach time, the Gulf Coast islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) stay relatively dry during this period.
Green Season (June to October)
The monsoon brings afternoon showers, usually short and dramatic rather than all-day drizzle. The countryside turns emerald green, waterfalls are at their most impressive, and tourist numbers drop sharply. Hotels offer significant discounts. The Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi) gets more rain, but the Gulf islands stay comparatively dry. September is the wettest month overall.
Festival Calendar
- Songkran (April 13-15) — Thai New Year water festival. The entire country participates
- Yi Peng & Loy Krathong (November, full moon) — Thousands of lanterns float into the Chiang Mai sky; krathongs (floating offerings) drift on rivers nationwide
- Phi Ta Khon (June/July) — The “Ghost Festival” in Loei province with elaborate masks and costumes
- Vegetarian Festival (September/October) — Phuket’s intense purification festival with street processions
- Full Moon Party (monthly) — Koh Phangan’s legendary beach party attracts thousands

- Gulf Coast (Samui, Phangan, Tao): December to March, plus June to September
