Xinjiang’s climate is extreme continental — scorching summers, bitter winters, and brief, glorious springs and autumns. The vast geography means conditions vary enormously between the northern grasslands and the southern deserts.
Spring (April to May)
The northern grasslands (Nalati, Bayanbulak) turn green, wildflowers carpet the Ili Valley, and temperatures are pleasant (15-25°C). April can still be chilly in the mountains, but May is ideal for photography and trekking. The apricot blossoms in the Ili Valley (early April) are a photographer’s dream.
Summer (June to August)
The best time for the northern regions: Heavenly Lake (Tianchi), Kanas Lake, and the Altai Mountains. High-altitude areas are warm but comfortable. Southern Xinjiang (Turpan, Taklamakan) is scorching — Turpan can exceed 45°C. Start your days at dawn. The Nalati Grasslands are at their peak, and shepherds move their flocks to summer pastures.
Autumn (September to October)
The golden season. Kanas Lake in September and October is legendary — birch and poplar forests turn brilliant gold around the turquoise lake. The weather is crisp, clear, and perfect for travel across the entire region. September is the best month overall. The Korla pear harvest happens in September.
Winter (November to March)
Bitterly cold, with temperatures dropping to -20°C or lower in the north. Heavy snow blankets the mountains. Ski resorts near Urumqi attract winter sports enthusiasts. The frozen landscapes around Kanas are hauntingly beautiful but many roads and facilities close. Most travelers should avoid this season.
