Thailand has over 1,400 islands scattered across the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand. Each has a distinct personality — from party meccas to castaway fantasies to luxury hideaways.
The Andaman Coast
Phuket — Thailand’s largest island and the easiest entry point. Excellent infrastructure, international airport, and beaches ranging from party-central Patong to serene Mai Khao. Great for first-timers. The Old Town’s Sino-Portuguese architecture is a cultural bonus.
Krabi & Railay — Towering limestone karsts rise from emerald water. Railay Beach (accessible only by boat) is a rock-climbing paradise. Ao Nang is the main base with restaurants and nightlife. The Four Islands tour by longtail boat is a perfect day trip.
Koh Phi Phi — Maya Bay (made famous by “The Beach”) is stunning, but expect crowds. The main island has a lively party scene at night. Nearby Koh Phi Phi Leh offers castaway beauty.
Koh Lanta — Laid-back, family-friendly, with long empty beaches. Great for couples and those seeking peace without complete isolation. The Old Town has charm and good seafood.
The Gulf of Thailand
Koh Samui — The Gulf’s big island. Well-developed with an international airport, luxury resorts, and excellent dining. Chaweng for nightlife, Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village for boutique shopping, Maenam for peace.
Koh Phangan — Famous for the Full Moon Party but so much more than that. The north and east coasts offer tranquil bays, yoga retreats, and jungle waterfalls. Arrive outside the Full Moon window and it’s a different island entirely.
Koh Tao — Thailand’s diving capital. Crystal-clear waters, affordable PADI certification, and a relaxed backpacker vibe. Even snorkelers will encounter turtles, reef sharks, and vibrant coral.
Hidden Gems
- Koh Lipe — Turquoise water, powdery white sand in the far south near Malaysia. Still relatively quiet
- Koh Chang — Near the Cambodian border, a mountainous island with waterfalls and uncrowded beaches
- Koh Yao Noi/Yai — Peaceful islands between Phuket and Krabi. Stunning views of Phang Nga Bay without the crowds
- Similan Islands — The best diving in Thailand. Closed May-October. Only accessible by liveaboard or day trip from Khao Lak
