Scenic drive east across Java (or optional flight to Surabaya then drive). Arrive in the Bromo area by evening. Check in to your hotel on the edge of the Tengger caldera. Early night — tomorrow’s wake-up is before dawn.

3:00 AM jeep departure to the Penanjakan viewpoint. Watch the sun rise over the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park — the view across the Sea of Sand with Mount Bromo, Mount Batok, and Mount Semeru in the distance is one of Indonesia’s most photographed scenes. Cross the sand sea by jeep, then hike or ride a horse to Bromo’s crater rim. Return for breakfast, then fly to Bali.
