Japan’s four distinct seasons each offer a completely different travel experience. Choosing when to go depends on what you want to see: pink cherry blossoms, vibrant autumn leaves, snow festivals, or summer fireworks.
Spring (March to May) — Cherry Blossom Season
The most iconic time to visit. Cherry blossoms (sakura) sweep from south to north between late March and early May. Kyoto’s Maruyama Park, Tokyo’s Ueno Park, and Mount Yoshino are legendary viewing spots. Book 6-8 months ahead — this is peak season and everything fills up fast. The blossom window is brief: full bloom lasts only about a week in each location.
Summer (June to August) — Festivals & Fireworks
Hot and humid across most of Japan, but this is festival season. The Gion Matsuri in Kyoto (July), Nebuta Matsuri in Aomori (August), and countless hanabi (fireworks) festivals light up the summer skies. Hokkaido offers pleasant summer temperatures and lavender fields in Furano. Climb Mount Fuji between July and early September when trails are open.
Autumn (September to November) — Fall Foliage
Arguably Japan’s most beautiful season. The autumn leaves (koyo) turn the country brilliant red and gold, starting in Hokkaido in September and peaking in Kyoto/Tokyo in November. The crowds are smaller than spring and the weather is perfect for temple-hopping. Arashiyama in Kyoto and the Fuji Five Lakes are spectacular.
Winter (December to February) — Snow & Illuminations
Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps become winter wonderlands. The Sapporo Snow Festival (February) features massive ice sculptures. Jigokudani Monkey Park near Nagano offers the surreal sight of snow monkeys bathing in hot springs. Winter illuminations in Tokyo, Kobe, and throughout the country are magical.

- Autumn leaves: November (Tokyo/Kyoto), October (Alps), late September (Hokkaido)
- Skiing: December to February (Niseko, Hakuba)
- Festivals: July-August (Gion Matsuri, Nebuta, fireworks)
- Budget travel: Mid-January to February, June, late November
