Day 1: Arrive Bishkek

  • Manas Airport (FRU) Pickup
  • Ala-Too Square โ€” Bishkek’s main plaza. The changing of the guard at the flagpole, the white marble State History Museum, and the equestrian statue of Manas (Kyrgyzstan’s mythical hero whose epic poem has 500,000 lines โ€” 20x longer than the Odyssey)
  • Osh Bazaar โ€” Bishkek’s sprawling main market. Try kurut (salty dried yogurt balls), fresh Kyrgyz honey (alpine wildflower, world-renowned), and kymyz (fermented mare’s milk)
  • Welcome dinner at a traditional chaikhana

Overnight in Bishkek.

Day 2: Burana Tower & Issyk-Kul Lake

  • Burana Tower โ€” 11th-century minaret, all that remains of Balasagun, the 9th-century Karakhanid capital (birthplace of the poet Yusuf Khass Hajib). Originally 45m, now 25m after earthquakes. Climb the spiral staircase to see the surrounding balbals โ€” 6th-10th century Turkic warrior gravestones, weathered stone figures staring into eternity
  • Drive to Issyk-Kul Lake (250km) โ€” the world’s second-largest alpine lake (after Titicaca). “Issyk-Kul” means “warm lake” โ€” at 1,607m altitude, it never freezes despite surrounding 4,000m+ snow peaks. 180km long, 60km wide, visibility to 20m. The deep blue water against snow-capped mountains is breathtaking
  • Cholpon-Ata Petroglyphs โ€” Open-air museum with 2,000+ rock carvings from 800 BC to 400 AD. Hunters chasing ibex, snow leopards, and deer; chariots; sun-headed deities. The petroglyphs cover 42 hectares on the shore of the lake
  • Rukh Ordo Cultural Center โ€” Unique open-air museum dedicated to religious harmony. Five identical white chapels representing Islam, Orthodox Christianity, Catholicism, Buddhism, and Judaism, surrounding a central philosophy hall. Statues of global thinkers (Confucius, Buddha, Mohammed, Moses, Jesus) and an art gallery with works by Chinghiz Aitmatov

Overnight at Issyk-Kul lake resort.

Day 3: Issyk-Kul to Karakol โ€” Eastern Shore

  • Scenic drive along the northern shore to Karakol (150km)
  • Karakol City Tour:
    • Dungan Mosque โ€” Entirely wooden mosque built 1907-1910 by Chinese Muslims (Dungans) who fled persecution. Chinese pagoda-style architecture, no nails used, painted in red, green, and yellow with dragons and phoenixes โ€” utterly unique in the Islamic world
    • Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral โ€” 1895 wooden church with gold onion domes, surprising in this Muslim-majority country. The iconostasis was painted by Russian artists exiled to Siberia
    • Przhevalsky Museum โ€” Memorial to Nikolai Przhevalsky, the great Russian explorer who mapped Central Asia and discovered the wild horse species named after him (Przewalski’s horse, the world’s last truly wild horse). His grave overlooks Issyk-Kul
  • Evening: Karakol’s famous ashlyam-fu (cold noodle soup with spicy vinegar sauce, a Dungan specialty found nowhere else in Central Asia)

Overnight in Karakol.

Day 4: Jeti-Oguz & Altyn Arashan

  • Jeti-Oguz (Seven Bulls) โ€” Dramatic red sandstone cliffs eroded into seven distinctive formations. The “Broken Heart” rock sits at the entrance. Soviet-era sanatoriums dot the valley, offering radon and hydrogen sulfide baths
  • Altyn Arashan Hot Springs โ€” Russian 4WD truck ride (1 hour) up a stomach-churning mountain track to 2,600m. Natural hot springs (40ยฐC) in a pristine alpine valley surrounded by 4,000m peaks. Soak in outdoor pools with views of Palatka Peak (4,620m). Walk 30 minutes further to a panoramic viewpoint
  • Return to Karakol

Overnight in Karakol.

Day 5: South Shore to Kochkor โ€” Eagle Hunters

  • Drive along Issyk-Kul’s southern shore (300km) โ€” wilder, less developed, with dramatic mountain-meets-lake scenery
  • Skazka Canyon (Fairy Tale Canyon) โ€” Eroded red, yellow, and orange rock formations that resemble castles, dragons, and the Great Wall of China. Named for their fantastical shapes. The colors at sunset are extraordinary
  • Bokonbayevo Eagle Hunting Demonstration โ€” Meet a berkutchi (traditional eagle hunter) in his village. See a golden eagle (2m wingspan) up close, watch the ancient hunting technique passed down through generations, and learn about this 3,000-year-old tradition. Eagles are released back to the wild after 15 years of partnership
  • Continue to Kochkor village โ€” traditional felt-making demonstration. Kyrgyz women create shyrdaks (intricately patterned felt carpets) using colored wool and a time-consuming pressing technique. UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Try making your own small shyrdak

Overnight in Kochkor guesthouse.

Day 6: Tash Rabat โ€” Lost Caravanserai

  • Drive through the At-Bashy Valley to Tash Rabat (4 hours). The landscape becomes increasingly remote and stunning โ€” wide valleys, snow peaks, yurts dotting the grasslands, barely any other vehicles
  • Tash Rabat Caravanserai โ€” A perfectly preserved 15th-century stone caravanserai at 3,200m, tucked into a mountainside on the ancient Silk Road route to Kashgar (China). 31 rooms including a central domed hall, stables, and prisoners’ dungeon. Walk through the dark corridors โ€” the silence is profound. Originally a Nestorian Christian monastery (10th century) before becoming a Silk Road inn. One of Central Asia’s most atmospheric sites, reached by a dirt road with almost no other tourists
  • Hike to Tash Rabat Lake (1 hour) or explore the surrounding hills. The altitude and isolation create an almost spiritual silence
  • Dinner at a nearby yurt camp โ€” home-cooked laghman (hand-pulled noodles with mutton and vegetables) under the stars

Overnight in Tash Rabat yurt camp.

Day 7: Song-Kul Lake โ€” Jailoo Pasture

  • Epic drive to Song-Kul Lake (5 hours, 4WD). Cross the 3,400m Moldo-Ashuu Pass โ€” the landscape changes from desert to alpine in heart-stopping panoramas
  • Song-Kul Lake โ€” Kyrgyzstan’s second-largest lake at 3,016m, a vast alpine pasture (jailoo) where semi-nomadic herders bring their animals for summer grazing. The scene: hundreds of horses, sheep, and yaks grazing freely; white yurts scattered across the grassland; the lake reflecting the sky and the 3,800m Song-Kul Too mountains. This is Central Asia as it has been for millennia
  • Stay in a herder’s yurt. Drink kymyz (fermented mare’s milk โ€” slightly fizzy, sour, an acquired taste but part of the experience). Ride a horse across the jailoo at sunset. At 3,000m+, the Milky Way is so bright it casts shadows
  • Dinner in the yurt: freshly slaughtered lamb, beshbarmak, and endless cups of tea. Your host family will sing traditional songs by the fire

Overnight in Song-Kul yurt.

Day 8: Song-Kul to Bishkek

  • Sunrise over Song-Kul โ€” the lake perfectly still, the horses drinking at the shore, the mountains turning pink. A moment of raw, unfiltered beauty
  • Return drive to Bishkek (5 hours)
  • Afternoon at leisure โ€” Bishkek’s leafy boulevards, Victory Square, Oak Park
  • Farewell Dinner โ€” Bishkek’s best Central Asian restaurant. Shashlyk (grilled lamb skewers), manty (steamed dumplings), and boso laghman (fried noodles) with Kyrgyz cognac

Overnight in Bishkek.

Day 9: Departure

  • Transfer to Manas Airport (FRU) for departure

Kyrgyzstan doesn’t just show you nomadic life โ€” you live it. Sleeping in yurts, riding across alpine pastures, drinking fermented mare’s milk with herders whose way of life has barely changed in a thousand years. This is Central Asia at its most raw and real.

What’s Included

  • 8 nights (3โ˜… Bishkek + lake resort + guesthouses + 2 yurt stays), 4WD transport, English-speaking guide, eagle hunting demonstration, felt-making workshop, horse riding at Song-Kul, all meals at yurt camps, entrance fees
