Day 1: Arrival โ Step into Paradise
- Arrive at Velana International Airport (MLE). Your Sun Island representative greets you with a welcome board and cold towel. Transfer options: domestic flight (20 minutes) + speedboat, or seaplane (25 minutes, spectacular atoll views)
- Nalaguraidhoo Island โ Also known as Sun Island, this is one of the largest resort islands in the Maldives. 1.6km long with lush tropical vegetation โ coconut palms, banyan trees, frangipani, and bougainvillea everywhere. The island’s main beach stretches for over a kilometer of blinding white sand. Unlike smaller Maldives resorts that feel like a sandbar, Sun Island feels like a genuine tropical island
- Sunset Overwater Villa โ Check into your villa perched over the lagoon. Floor-to-ceiling windows face the setting sun. The private deck has sun loungers, a plunge pool, and steps directly into the warm, shallow lagoon
- Evening: President’s Cruise โ A sunset cruise around the island on the resort’s largest dhoni. Champagne, canapรฉs, and the first of many magnificent Maldivian sunsets
- Dinner: International buffet at the main restaurant โ live cooking stations, seafood, Asian and Western options. The resort’s all-inclusive plan covers meals at multiple restaurants
Overnight in Overwater Villa.
Day 2: Beach Bliss & Water Adventures
- Morning: Private beach time. Sun Island’s main beach is award-worthy โ powder-fine white sand, shallow turquoise water stretching for hundreds of meters. The lagoon is protected by the outer reef, making it calm and perfect for swimming. Walk the sandbar that emerges at low tide
- Snorkeling Safari โ The resort’s house reef starts just offshore. South Ari Atoll is famous for whale sharks (year-round population โ one of the few places on Earth where encounters are almost guaranteed). The resort’s marine center offers guided snorkeling trips: the outer reef drop-off, a turtle cleaning station, and if conditions permit, whale shark search (May-November manta season, whale sharks year-round)
- Afternoon: Water Sports Center โ Complimentary kayaks, paddleboards, and pedal boats. Premium activities: jet ski safari (explore uninhabited neighboring islands), parasailing (see Sun Island’s full shape from above), and flyboarding. The water sports team is excellent with beginners
- Sunset Fishing โ Traditional Maldivian hand-line fishing at sunset. The method hasn’t changed in centuries: a wooden spool, a weighted line, and bait. Catch your dinner โ the resort’s chef will prepare your catch however you like (grilled, curry, sashimi). Even if you don’t catch anything, the sunset from a fishing dhoni is unforgettable
Overnight in Overwater Villa.
Day 3: Island Exploration & Spa Serenity
- Morning: Tropical Garden Tour โ Sun Island has 500,000+ plants and trees. A guided walk through the botanical gardens: learn about coconut palm uses (every part of the tree is used โ fronds for roofing, husk for rope, shell for charcoal, meat for food and oil), the healing properties of noni fruit, the fragrant screw pine (used in traditional medicine), and the island’s organic vegetable garden that supplies the resort’s restaurants
- Araamu Spa โ The resort’s overwater spa is a destination in itself. Treatment rooms with glass floors, open to the lagoon on one side. The signature treatment: a 90-minute Maldivian Sand Bundle massage โ heated sand pouches infused with local herbs, combined with coconut oil massage. Sounds of the ocean, scent of frangipani oil, the sensation of warm sand and skilled hands โ pure transportive bliss
- Afternoon: Sunset Dhoni Cruise โ This time with a traditional sail if winds permit. The Maldives’ dhonis were originally sailing vessels โ the resorts maintain a few traditional rigs for passenger cruises. Drift past uninhabited islands as the sky performs its nightly color show
- Dinner: Sunset Restaurant โ Overwater fine dining. Lobster thermidor, Maldivian lobster (crayfish, no claws), seared tuna with wasabi, and chocolate lava cake. Waves lapping beneath the restaurant, tiki torches reflecting on the water
Overnight in Overwater Villa.
Day 4: Local Island Discovery & Maldivian Culture
- Maamigili Island Visit โ The nearest inhabited island to Sun Island, Maamigili is a traditional Maldivian fishing village. Walk the sandy streets (no cars โ just bicycles and wheelbarrows), visit the mosque, the school, and the harbor. The contrast with the resort is stark and valuable โ this is how most Maldivians live. The island’s cafe serves hedhikaa (Maldivian short eats): gulha (tuna-stuffed dough balls), bajiya (samosa-like pastries), and masroshi (tuna-filled flatbread). Meet local artisans: women weaving thundu kunaa mats from reeds, men building miniature dhonis, and lacquer artisans painting intricate patterns on wooden boxes โ a tradition brought to Maldives by Chinese traders in the 14th century
- Afternoon at leisure. One last snorkel, one last swim in your villa’s private lagoon. Take photos โ the late afternoon light in the Maldives is gold
- Farewell Dinner: Bodu Beru Night โ The resort’s weekly cultural show. Bodu beru (“big drum” in Dhivehi) is the traditional music of the Maldives, with roots in East African rhythms brought by sailors centuries ago. A line of drummers sits behind massive drums made from coconut wood and manta ray skin. The beat starts slow โ a heartbeat. Gradually accelerates. Drummers begin to sway, then dance, then enter a trance-like state. The lead singer’s voice rises above the drums. By the climax, the energy is electric โ pure, raw, transporting. Guests are pulled into the dance. It’s impossible not to move.
Overnight in Overwater Villa.
Day 5: Last Sunrise & Departure
- Wake for one final Maldivian sunrise. Coffee on your deck, feet dangling over the lagoon, watching the sky transform. Pack slowly โ you’ll want to stretch every moment
- Breakfast: one last plate of mas huni and roshi, one last fresh papaya, one last cup of Maldivian tea
- Transfer to the airport. As your seaplane or speedboat departs, watch Sun Island shrink to a green dot in a turquoise sea. The Maldives may be leaving your sight, but it won’t leave your memory
Sun Island offers something rare in the Maldives โ space. Space to walk, to explore, to feel like you’re on a real island rather than a sandbar. Combined with the trademark Maldivian hospitality and those impossible water colors, it’s a genuine tropical escape.
