Best Time to Visit India

Seasons, Festivals & Regional Weather Guide

Understanding India’s Climate

India is vast — spanning from the Himalayas to the tropics — so “best time” depends entirely on where you’re going. In general, the most pleasant travel window is October to March, when temperatures are moderate across most of the country.

Season by Season

Winter (November-February): The peak tourist season. North India is cool and crisp — perfect for the Golden Triangle and Rajasthan. South India is warm and dry. This is the best time for most regions.

Summer (March-May): North India heats up dramatically (Delhi can hit 45°C). Head to the Himalayan foothills — Shimla, Darjeeling, Sikkim — or to South India where it’s hot but manageable.

Monsoon (June-September): The rains transform India. Kerala and the Western Ghats become incredibly lush. Rajasthan and Ladakh are surprisingly good choices (Ladakh is in a rain shadow). This is the best time for Ayurvedic treatments in Kerala.

Festival Timing

Diwali (October/November) and Holi (March) are India’s most spectacular festivals. Book well in advance for these periods.
