India Travel Guide — First-Timer’s Essential Tips
Everything You Need to Know Before You Go
Visas & Entry
Most nationalities can apply for an e-Visa online — valid for 30 days, 1 year, or 5 years. Apply at least 4 days before travel. Your passport must have 6 months validity.
Health & Safety
Consult a travel clinic about vaccinations. Drink only bottled or purified water. Carry hand sanitizer. India is generally safe for travelers, but exercise normal precautions — use hotel safes, avoid walking alone late at night in unfamiliar areas, and dress modestly (especially at religious sites).
Getting Around
India is huge. Domestic flights connect major cities efficiently. For shorter distances, private cars with drivers are affordable and comfortable. The railway network is legendary — the Shatabdi and Rajdhani Express trains offer a civilized experience.
What to Pack
Light cotton clothing (modest — cover shoulders and knees), comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, mosquito repellent, and a universal adapter. A scarf or shawl is invaluable — use it to cover your head at temples or as a wrap when it’s cool.
Food & Water Safety
Indian cuisine is one of the world’s greatest. Eat where it’s busy (high turnover = fresh food). Start with milder dishes and build up. Avoid tap water, ice in street stalls, and pre-cut fruit from vendors. Your private guide will recommend the best safe places to eat.
