Sumatra Wildlife Expedition 9 Days
Orangutans, Elephants & the Rainforests of Gunung Leuser
Tour Overview
Sumatra is Indonesia’s last great wilderness — a vast, jungled island where wild orangutans still swing through the canopy, where elephants roam the lowland forests, and where the call of the siamang gibbon echoes through the morning mist. This 9-day expedition takes you deep into Gunung Leuser National Park, one of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems.
Led by expert local trackers and naturalist guides, this is a serious wildlife journey for those who want to encounter Asia’s most endangered species in their natural habitat. You’ll trek through primary rainforest, tube down jungle rivers, and sleep at eco-lodges that support conservation directly.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Airport pickup in Medan, North Sumatra. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon orientation and briefing about the wildlife expedition. Evening at leisure.
Drive to Tangkahan (4-5 hrs), a remote eco-tourism village on the edge of Gunung Leuser. Check in to your jungle eco-lodge. Afternoon walk to a nearby waterfall where you can swim.
Full-day jungle trek with the Tangkahan ranger team. Track Sumatran elephants through the lowland forest — learn to identify their footprints, feeding signs, and dung. Observe elephants bathing in the river (from a respectful distance). Afternoon tubing down the river back to the village.
Morning drive to Bukit Lawang (2-3 hrs) — the gateway to the orangutan sanctuary. Check in to your riverside eco-lodge. Afternoon introductory walk to the orangutan feeding platform, where semi-wild orangutans often appear for supplementary fruit.
Full-day guided trek into Gunung Leuser National Park with experienced local trackers. The primary target is the Sumatran orangutan, but you’ll also look for siamang gibbons, Thomas leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, monitor lizards, and hornbills. Overnight at a jungle camp by the river.
Dawn chorus walk — the forest comes alive with gibbon calls. Continue trekking deeper into the park. Afternoon tube down the Bohorok River back to Bukit Lawang — a refreshing end to two days of trekking.
Day at leisure. Options: visit the local market, join a batik-making workshop, explore the village, or take a shorter jungle walk. Evening traditional Sumatran music performance by the local community.
Morning at leisure by the river. Afternoon drive back to Medan. Farewell dinner at one of Medan’s celebrated restaurants — try the city’s famous durian if you’re brave!
