Day 1: Arrive Dushanbe โ Monday Market City
- Dushanbe Airport (DYU) Pickup โ Dushanbe means “Monday” in Tajik (the city grew from a Monday market village)
- Rudaki Park & Somoni Monument โ Central Dushanbe’s beautiful park with the 45m Ismail Somoni arch. Samanid Empire flags line the boulevards. The giant statue of Rudaki, the father of Persian poetry (858-941 AD), reminds you that Tajiks are Persian-speaking, unlike their Turkic neighbors
- National Museum of Tajikistan โ Housed in a massive modern building. The highlight: the 13m-long sleeping Buddha in Nirvana (discovered in 1966 at Ajina Tepe, 7th century AD), one of the largest ancient Buddhist statues in Central Asia โ a reminder that Buddhism reached Central Asia long before Islam
- Welcome dinner: Tajik plov (rice pilaf with chickpeas, carrots, and lamb โ Dushanbe’s version is distinct from Uzbek plov, adding strips of yellow turnip), qurutob (Tajikistan’s national dish โ fatir bread soaked in yogurt with onions, tomatoes, and flaxseed oil)
Overnight in Dushanbe.
Day 2: Dushanbe to Istaravshan โ City of Craftsmen
- Drive through the scenic Anzob Tunnel (5km, “Tunnel of Death” before renovation) to northern Tajikistan (5 hours). Cross the 3,372m Anzob Pass โ 360ยฐ mountain panoramas
- Istaravshan โ One of Central Asia’s oldest continuously inhabited cities (2,500+ years, founded by Cyrus the Great). Known for its craftsmen โ especially knife makers and wood carvers:
- Mug Teppe โ Ancient citadel mound with panoramic views over the old city. Fire temple ruins from the pre-Islamic era
- Kok Gumbaz (Blue Dome) Mosque & Madrassah โ 16th-century Timurid architecture, the blue dome visible from across the city
- Knife Maker’s Workshop โ Watch a master craftsman forge a pichok (traditional Tajik knife) with a Damascus-steel patterned blade and horn handle. Tajik knives are famous throughout Central Asia
- Sari Mazor Bazaar โ The 16th-century domed bazaar, still active. Buy hand-embroidered suzani textiles and carved wooden combs
Overnight in Istaravshan/Khujand.
Day 3: Khujand โ Alexandria on the Jaxartes
- Khujand Fortress & Archaeological Museum โ The 2,500-year-old fortress rebuilt many times, most recently in 2004. The original walls were built by Alexander the Great, who founded “Alexandria Eschate” (Alexandria the Furthest) here in 329 BC โ the northernmost point of his empire. The museum displays Hellenistic artifacts from the original Greek settlement
- Panjshanbe Bazaar โ “Thursday Market,” one of Central Asia’s most authentic. The vast covered market hall with its Soviet-era dome is filled with fresh naan, dried fruits from the Fergana Valley, and Tajik silk
- Sheikh Muslihiddin Mausoleum โ 14th-century tomb of Khujand’s patron saint, with a beautiful 17th-century mosque and 20m painted wooden minaret
- Kayrakkum Reservoir โ The “Tajik Sea,” a vast Soviet-era reservoir on the Syr Darya River. Beach time with mountain views, swimming in summer
Overnight in Khujand.
Day 4: Seven Lakes (Haft Kul) โ Fann Mountains
- Drive south to the Fann Mountains, one of Central Asia’s most beautiful alpine regions (5 hours)
- The Seven Lakes (Haft Kul) โ A chain of seven glacial lakes in the Shing Valley, each at a different elevation (1,800-2,400m), each a different color โ from milky turquoise to deep navy to emerald green. The road winds past all seven, with the highest lake (Hazorchashma) backed by 4,000m peaks. Wildflowers carpet the meadows in June-July. The Mirzali River connects them in a chain of waterfalls
- Settle into a mountain guesthouse. Hike to the upper lakes โ the air is thin, the silence is absolute, the mountains are so close you feel you could touch them
Overnight in Fann Mountains guesthouse.
Day 5: Penjikent โ Pompeii of Central Asia
- Morning hike around the Seven Lakes, last swim in the crystal-cold water
- Drive to Penjikent (4 hours) โ an ancient Sogdian city on the Zerafshan River
- Ancient Penjikent โ “The Pompeii of Central Asia.” A 5th-8th century Sogdian city destroyed during the Arab conquest in 722 AD. Excavations have revealed:
- Two-story merchants’ houses with intact wall paintings โ Sogdian nobles feasting, warriors battling demons, multi-armed Hindu deities, and stories from the Persian epic Shahnameh
- Zoroastrian fire temples and Buddhist stupas side by side โ the Sogdians were religiously tolerant traders
- The original frescoes are in the Hermitage (St. Petersburg) and Dushanbe, but the excavated ruins are evocative โ walking the streets of a city frozen in time for 1,300 years
- Sarazm โ 5,500-year-old settlement (UNESCO), one of Central Asia’s oldest. Evidence of early agriculture, metallurgy, and long-distance trade. The “Princess of Sarazm” burial contained lapis lazuli beads from Afghanistan and turquoise โ trade networks spanning 2,000km in 3500 BC
Overnight in Penjikent.
Day 6: Iskanderkul Lake โ Alexander’s Lake
- Drive to Iskanderkul (3 hours) through dramatic mountain scenery
- Iskanderkul Lake โ Legend says Alexander the Great (Iskander in Persian) camped here during his Central Asian campaign. His beloved horse Bucephalus supposedly drowned in the lake. The 3.4kmยฒ lake at 2,195m is a deep turquoise ringed by 4,000m peaks of the Gissar Range
- Iskanderkul Waterfall (Niagara of the Fann Mountains) โ 43m cascade where the Iskander Darya River exits the lake, thundering into a deep gorge. Walk behind the waterfall for a soaking adrenaline rush
- Snake Lake (Zmeinoe Ozero) โ A smaller, warmer lake 2km from Iskanderkul. Don’t worry about the name โ the “snakes” are harmless water snakes. Swimming possible here (Iskanderkul itself is too cold)
- Farewell dinner in the mountains โ freshly caught trout from the lake, grilled over an open fire
Overnight at Iskanderkul guesthouse.
Day 7: Return to Dushanbe & Departure
- Morning: Last walk around the lake. The water is mirror-calm at dawn, reflecting the mountains perfectly
- Drive back to Dushanbe (3 hours)
- Hissar Fortress โ 16th-century fortress 30km from Dushanbe. The massive arched gateway with two towers is all that survived the Soviet bombardment of 1921. The adjacent 17th-century madrassah now houses a small museum
- Transfer to Dushanbe Airport (DYU) for departure
Tajikistan remains one of the least visited countries on the Silk Road โ which means you experience its ancient ruins, turquoise lakes, and Persian culture with the wonder of a genuine discovery.
