Day 1: Islamabad to Skardu โ Flight over Nanga Parbat
- Islamabad to Skardu Flight (1 hour, weather dependent) โ One of the world’s most spectacular flights. The plane weaves through the Indus Gorge, past Nanga Parbat’s 8,126m Rupal Face (the world’s highest mountain wall, 4,600m of vertical relief). If flying is impossible, a 2-day road journey through the Karakoram Highway and Skardu Road offers its own epic landscapes
- Arrive Skardu at 2,228m โ the gateway to the Karakoram’s highest peaks. Five of the world’s 14 8,000m peaks are accessible from here
- Afternoon: Explore Skardu Bazaar โ Tibetan-influenced handicrafts, Balti caps, dried apricots (Skardu is famous for them), and Pashmina shawls brought down from the mountains
Overnight in Skardu.
Day 2: Shangri-La Resort & Kachura Lakes
- Shangri-La Resort (Lower Kachura Lake) โ The resort that gave Skardu its “Heaven on Earth” reputation. Traditional red-roofed cottages perched above a heart-shaped turquoise lake. The resort’s iconic red Chinese bridge and the restaurant built inside a retired aircraft on the lakeshore are surreal sights. Walk the lakeside path, feed the ducks, soak in the fairytale atmosphere
- Upper Kachura Lake โ The wilder, colder sibling. Surrounded by apricot orchards and pine trees, its deep blue water is so cold that swimming is an endurance test. Far fewer visitors โ you may have a section of shoreline to yourself
- Afternoon: Visit a traditional Balti village. Baltistan’s culture is distinctly Tibetan-influenced โ the people, language, food, and architecture feel more like Ladakh than Pakistan. Try butter tea (salty, made with yak butter) and skyu (hand-rolled wheat pasta with vegetables)
Overnight in Skardu.
Day 3: Shigar Valley โ Fort & Cold Desert
- Shigar Fort (Fong Khar) โ 400-year-old fort-palace of the Raja of Shigar, now a meticulously restored luxury heritage hotel by the Aga Khan Trust. The fort’s massive timber-braced stone walls, intricate wood-carved balconies, and the throne room with its 17th-century frescoes are breathtaking. Even if you’re not staying here, the guided tour is worth every minute
- Sarfa Ranga Cold Desert โ A genuine cold desert at 2,226m โ one of the highest deserts in the world. Sand dunes with snow-capped mountains as the backdrop create an impossible landscape. Jeep safari across the dunes, stop for photos where desert meets ice
- Organic Village & Apricot Orchards โ Shigar Valley is covered in apricot trees. In August, the harvest is in full swing โ women drying apricots on rooftops, the sweet scent filling the valley. Taste fresh, sun-dried, and kernel oil apricots โ three completely different flavors
Overnight in Shigar.
Day 4: Deosai National Park โ Land of Giants
- Deosai Plains โ “The Land of Giants,” the world’s second-highest plateau (after Tibet) at 4,114m. 3,000kmยฒ of rolling grasslands that burst into a carpet of wildflowers from July-September โ blue poppies, yellow potentillas, purple geraniums, and thousands of butterflies. The silence here is absolute, broken only by the whistle of marmots
- Sheosar Lake โ The “Blind Lake” at 4,142m, one of the world’s highest lakes. Its heart shape is visible from the surrounding hills. The water is so clear you can see the bottom at 5m depth, surrounded by snow peaks even in August
- Himalayan Brown Bear Spotting โ Deosai has a healthy population of Himalayan brown bears. With a good guide and patience, spotting one foraging in the grasslands is a realistic possibility. Also look for Himalayan ibex, golden marmots (they’re everywhere, standing sentinel on their hind legs), red foxes, and the lammergeier (bearded vulture with a 2.8m wingspan, dropping bones from height to crack them open)
- Picnic lunch in the grasslands โ the most scenic lunch spot of your life
- Return to Skardu via the Sadpara Dam, a brilliant blue reservoir in a desert valley
Overnight in Skardu.
Day 5: K2 View & Manthokha Waterfall
- K2 Viewpoint at 5am โ Drive to the nearest viewpoint where K2 (8,611m) is visible. The second-highest mountain on Earth, K2 is the “Savage Mountain” โ the hardest 8,000m peak to climb, with a 25% fatality rate. From Skardu’s perspective, it’s a perfect pyramid of ice and rock, utterly dominating the skyline. The early morning light turns it from steel blue to pink to blazing white โ 15 minutes that justify the entire trip
- Katpana Lake โ A seasonal lake that appears in the cold desert only in summer months. Another Skardu oddity โ swimming in a lake surrounded by sand dunes
- Manthokha Waterfall โ A thundering 55m waterfall in the Kharmang Valley, 60km from Skardu. The water plunges through a narrow gorge into a deep pool where you can swim. Trout fishing available in the stream below
Overnight in Skardu.
Day 6: Soq Valley & K2 Museum
- Soq Valley โ A hidden gem 20km from Skardu. Terraced fields of wheat and barley, traditional water mills (chuskus), and views of Masherbrum (K1, 7,821m). Walk through the valley, meet farmers working their fields with methods unchanged for centuries
- K2 Museum โ Located at the K2 Motel, this small but fascinating museum documents the history of K2 expeditions. See original equipment from the 1954 Italian first ascent, photos of every summit team, and the geology of the Karakoram explained. The highlight: a scale model showing K2’s terrifying serac (ice cliff) that hangs over the Bottleneck โ the mountain’s most dangerous feature
- Afternoon free in Skardu โ shop for Balti handicrafts, try local apricot cake at a cafe overlooking the Indus
Overnight in Skardu.
Day 7: Shigar to Islamabad โ Return Journey
- Morning flight from Skardu to Islamabad, or begin the road journey. If flying, your last aerial view of Nanga Parbat and the Karakoram is a fitting farewell
- If driving (Day 7-8): Follow the Indus River through the Karakoram, passing ancient rock inscriptions (5th-8th century) at Chilas, the massive 4,500m cliff of Nanga Parbat’s Raikot Face, and the junction of the three mountain ranges at Jaglot
- Arrive Islamabad โ farewell dinner at Monal Restaurant, Islamabad’s most famous hilltop restaurant with panoramic city views and the Margalla Hills
Overnight in Islamabad.
Day 8: Departure
- Faisal Mosque โ The national mosque of Pakistan, a stunning 1986 design by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay. The tent-like structure (without a traditional dome) can accommodate 300,000 worshippers, with four 90m minarets inspired by Turkish architecture
- Saidpur Village โ 500-year-old village now preserved as a heritage site with artisan workshops, traditional food stalls, and views of the Margalla Hills
- Transfer to Islamabad Airport (ISB) for departure
Skardu isn’t just a destination. It’s an altitude โ physical and spiritual โ that changes you. When you stand before K2, you understand why the Balti people call it Chogori: “King of Mountains.”
What’s Included
- 7 nights (Skardu guesthouses/resorts + Islamabad hotel), domestic flight (weather permitting) or road transport, private 4WD, English-speaking guide, all meals in Skardu/Shigar, entrance fees, Deosai permit
